Q

Why should coaches and players be careful to not place too much emphasis on extrinsic rewards?

A
  • Over-use may lead to loss in value or incentive
  • If there is always a trophy/badge on offer, this might become the norm rather than exception. Players may then compete to get the reward and not for the true value of the game
  • Could place pressure on performers to get the reward and could lead to cheating, as players will bend the rules in order to get the trophy
  • Extrinsic motives can undermine the intrinsic reasons for competing

Q

What are the strategies that can be used to maintain both types of motivation?

A
  • Offering rewards and incentives early on
  • Making the activity fun and enjoyable
  • Point out health benefits
  • Breaking the skill down into parts, allowing success
  • Point out role models
  • Give them praise, so they feel responsible for any success achieved
  • Attributing success internally. (telling the performer the good result was down to them)
  • Setting goals
  • Using feedback to inspire and correct errors
