Someone who influences you towards achieving your goals

Maintaining effort and motivation by inspiring the team and setting targets
What are the 2 types of leader?
Prescribed leader and emergent leader
What is a prescribed leader?
Appointed from outside the group, perhaps from another group/higher authority
What is an example of a prescribed leader?
National governing bodies appoint national team managers
What is an emergent leader?
Appointed from within the existing group. There is a high level of respect for this person
What is an example of an emergent leader?
Sunday league team voting last seasons ‘players player’ as captain or experienced leader becomes a coach

What is charisma?
Certain demeanour and presence that the leader has which makes others listen and follow
What are interpersonal skills?
Needs to interact with other members of the team and sometimes those outside the group
Why does a leader need confidence?
A confident approach from a leader can spread confidence to their players as confidence can be gained from others
Why does a leader need organisational skills?
Needs to plan and prepare for training, linking it to the demands of the team

Autocratic

What are the features of autocratic leadership?
Dictatorial
Adopts a task-orientated style
Sole decision maker
When should autocratic leadership be used?
In dangerous situations
With large groups
If time is limited

Male performers
What is an example of autocratic leadership?
A basketball coach calls a time out towards the end of a match and instructs players to run a specific set play in the remaining seconds as it is the most effective strategy

Interested in ensuring relationships are developed within the group
Group members are involved in making decisions
Sympathetic approach
When should democratic leadership be used?
With small groups
If lots of time is available
With friendly groups
With advanced performers

Female performers
What is an example of democratic leadership?
A doubles tennis coach spends time with the players discussing which strategies are best to use in their upcoming fixture. He takes on board their suggestions before making a final decision
What are the features of laissez-faire leadership style?
Leader is more of a figurehead than an active leader - hands off approach
Group members make all the decisions
Allows discovery but can lead to lack of direction
When should Laissez-faire be used?
If a problem-solving approach is required
Only effective with advanced performers
