Motivation – definition
The direction and intensity of one’s effort
Drive can be defined as
Directed, motivated or ‘energised’ behaviour that an individual has towards achieving a certain goal

Trait Motivational View
Suggest motivated behaviour is primarily a function of individual characteristics
Interactionist Motivational view
This is believed to be a combination of 2 factors and how they interact
Situational Motivational view
Motivation is determined by the environment that they are in
Intrinsic motivation (definition)
4 characteristics of it?
Internal drives to participate or to perform well
- Emotional feelings
- Satisfaction
- Personal accomplishment
- Physical feeling of well-being
Extrinsic motivation (definition)
2 things about it?
External drives to participate to perform well
- These can be extremely powerful in determining whether we want to learn a skill and whether we want to perfect it.
- Extrinsic motivation can come in the form of tangible and intangible rewards

- Certificates
- Medals
- Prize money
- Awards
Intangible:
- Applause
- Praise
- Acknowledgement from team mates
