mother and infant Flashcards
what is attachment
close two-way emotional bond between two individuals
how can we recognise attachment
- proximity
- separation distress
- secure base behaviour
what is secure base behaviour
even when we are independent of an attachment figure we tend to make regular contact with them; infants display this whilst playing
reciprocity meaning
a description of how two people interact
- mother- infant interaction is reciprocal in that both of them respond to each other’s signals
what happens to the interaction at around three months between a mother and infant
increasingly frequent, involves close attention to each other’s verbal signals and facial expressions
what is interaction reciprocal
when each person responds to the other and elicits a response from them
Reciprocal- Response (letter R to help remember)
what is interactional synchrony
mother and infant reflect both actions and emotions of other and do this in a CO-ORDINATED WAY
outline Meltzoff and Moore study into interactional synchrony
adults displayed one of three facial expressions or one of three distinctive gestures, found that infants as young as two years old could also display those actions
Isabella et al study into interactional synchrony
- observed 30 mothers and infants together
- found high levels in synchrony was associated with better relationship between the two
weakness 1 of studies
it’s hard to know what’s happening when observing the infants so observations would be better as you can remove EVs, has replicability and establish cause and effect
weakness 2
observations don’t tell us the purpose of synchrony or reciprocity
weakness 3
research is socially sensitive, impact on working mothers
