Harlow KEY STUDY Flashcards
What did he study
Baby monkeys
Aim of his experiment
Examine the extent to which contact comfort and food influences attachment behaviour in baby monkeys
Procedure
CONTROLLED OBSERVATION PROCEDURE WITH THE TIME SPENT WITH THE MOTHER BEING RECORDED AND LONG TERM EFFECTS RECORDED TOO
- He tested the idea that soft object serve some functions of a mother
- In one experiment he reared 16 baby monkeys with two surrogate mothers, one ‘wire mother’ and one ‘cloth mother’
- In condition one milk was dispensed by the plain wire mother
- However in the second condition the milk was dispensed by the cloth covered mother
Findings
- It was found that baby monkeys cuddle the soft objects in preference to the wire one and sought comfort from the class one when frightened regardless of which dispensed milk
- This sold that contact comfort was of more importance to the monkeys done food when it came to attachment behaviour
For the monkeys who have been deprived of a real mother how did this lead to a permanent affect
Most dysfunctional, more aggressive, less sociable, when some group to be mothers they neglected they’re young and let others attack the children
What did he concluded the critical period was
For this behaviour the mother figure have to be introduced to an infant monkey within 90 days for an attachment to form
