Bowlby's theory Flashcards
what does Bowlby’s monotropic theory state
children are born with the innate tendency to form attachment with their parents in order to increase the chances of survival
mnemonic for this theory
ASCMI
ASCMI stands for?
A Snap Chat Makes Images
adaptive, social release, critical period, monotropy, internal working model
adaptive
they give humans an advantage, making them more likely to survive
social release
infants possess unborn social releases which unlocks the tendency in adults to look after them
these are physical so a baby face makes them more cuter; behavioural is like crying
critical period
infants much form an attachment within critical period of up to 2 1/2 years, if not formed, child will be damaged for life
- ITS MORE OF A SENSITIVE PERIOD ACCORDING TO HIM, as you can still form attachments after, it’s just harder
monotropy
infants form special attachment with their primary caregiver, if mother isn’t around, a mother substitute will do
internal working model
-infants forms internal working model which is a template for future relationship expectations, so if the child had a healthy relationship with primary attachment figure, then future relationships are healthy
what type of explanation is this
evolutionary
attachment happens because (2 ways)
1) law of continuity, more continuous care means more strong attachment
2) law of accumulative separation, more separation more impact on attachment
