What is meant by strange situation
controlled observation procedure designed to measure security of attachment of a child using a two way mirror
What is meant by secure attachment

(60-75%)- responsive caregiver
- Explore happily but regularly go back to the caregiver, show separation anxiety and accept comfort from the caregiver
What is meant by insecure – avoidant attachment

(20-25%)- unresponsive caregiver
-Explore freely but doesn’t seek proximity of secure base behaviour, showed little response from caregiver leaves and doesn’t require comfort from the caregiver
What is meant by insecure – resistant attachment

(3%)- inconsistent caregiver
- Explore less and seek greater proximity, show huge stranger and separation distress but resist comfort when reunited with caregiver
What are the behaviours used to judge attachment called
- proximity seeking (so infant with a good attachment stays close to caregiver)
- exploration and secure base behaviour
- stranger anxiety
- separation anxiety
- response to reunions
The procedure has seven episodes which lasted three minutes long each, what are the seven episodes and what each one test
- child encouraged to explore (exploration and secure base behaviour)
- stranger comes in and tries to interact with child (stranger anxiety)
- caregiver leaves stranger alone with child (separation + stranger)
- caregiver returns and stranger leaves (reunion + exploration & secure base)
- caregiver leaves child alone (separation)
- stranger returns (stranger anxiety)
