Lorenz KEY STUDY Flashcards
1
Q
when did Lorenz first observe the phenomenon of imprinting
A
When he was a child and I never gave him a newly hatched duckling that used to follow him around
2
Q
Outline the procedure of his research
A
- randomly divided goose eggs into two batches, the first batch being the control group so they were hatched naturally by the mother, and the second batch being the experimental group which was placed in the incubator making sure he was the first large moving object that they saw
- He then marked them so he knew what condition they were in and placed them an upsidedown box the box was then removed and then the behaviour was recorded
3
Q
Findings for his research
A
The first batch which was the control group followed the mother, second batch which was the experimental group followed Lorenz
4
Q
What is this phenomenon on called and what is the definition of it
A
imprinting
the phenomenon in which animals attach themselves to the first moving object that they see
5
Q
What was the critical period of imprinting
A
4-25 hours after hatching
