More Hellenistic, Mosaic Glass Bowl, and More Flashcards
Apollonius, Boxer at Rest
This sculpture is a Greek original made of bronze. The statue is hollow and not solid, it’ll ring if you hit it. Copper is used (because it is a redder material) to show bruises. It was made during the Hellenistic Era.
Indirect Lost Wax Method
First, you make the desired sculpture out of wax then make mold out of red clay and plaster. This is put in a container and flipped upside-down and put in a kiln for several days. During this time, some of the weak wax melts away to form vents. The bronze is then melted and poured into the container. Lastly, the container is chipped away to reveal the statue and impurities are fixed up.
Alexander Mosaic
This mosaic depicts the turning point in the battle between the Greeks and the Persians. We can see Darius terrified and turning his chariot around and Alexander fearless on a horse. The piece is in the House of the Faun, arguably the most luxurious mansion in Pompeii.
GlassMaking: Mosaic Bowl
A lump of colored glass is first covered with transparent glass and rolled out into a tube. This is cut up into small circles and strips and made into a flat decorative round shape. This is then melted together in a kiln and then again over a bulge to give it the shape of a bowl.
