Dionysaic Frieze, Villa of Mysteries, Pompeii, and Conserving Apollo Saettante Flashcards
Where is the Villa of Mysteries?
It was on the coast of Italy, but lava expanded the land so it is quite far away from shore now.
What is in the Villa of Mysteries?
There is a giant mysterious room that’s walls are completely painted.
What does the giant Frieze depict?
It shows a huge ritual that involves the god of wine, Dionysus. Unfortunately, no one knows exactly what is shows.
What is the Apollo Saettante?
It is a statue of Apollo made of bronze. It shows him either pulling back an arrow on a bow, or releasing an arrow. We don’t know because whatever was in its hands is now gone.
How is the Apollo statue being conserved?
A lot of the imperfections such as holes are being fixed, and the ‘drape’ that was on the figure was too heavy so they are making a new one out of a lighter metal.
