Moray Morslay Flashcards
Moray aim
To investigate if hearing something meaningful (ur name) would break the barrier of selective attention
Moray research method
Lab
Moray procedure/apparatus
Brenell mark tape recorder with twin amplifiers- two independent outputs to ear ear in the headphones
Asked ps if loudness matched
Four shadowing practice trials
Loudness was 60DB above hearing threshold
Speech rate on tapes 150 words per minute
Male speaker
Moray exp 1 procedure + aim
Aim: to investigate whether we can remember unattended / rejected stimuli in a dichotic listening task
Procedure:
Ps read a short list of words repeated 35 times (rejected)
At the same time ps heard and had to ‘shadow’ - passage
After 30 secs they were given a recognition task with 21 words
Moray exp 1 results
Mean no. Of words recognised from shadowed: 4.9
Mean no. of words remembered from rejected: 1.9
Mean no. Of words remembered that did not appear: 2.6
Moray exp 1 conc.
We do not remember words from rejected message. We have a block on the info we are not paying attention to
Moray exp 2 aim
Can we break the barrier that stops us paying attention to info
Moray exp2 procedure
12 ps listened to 10 passages of light fiction
Told to shadow their right ear
In 3/10 of the rejected messages their name was mentioned with an instruction
(Affective cue)- eg. John smith change to your other ear
Moray exp2 findings
Times heard affective cue: 20/39
Times heard non affective cue: 4/36
Moray exp2 conc.
Meaningful info/ affective cues can break through the barrier of selective attention
