1- to see if the tendency to help people within a city was stable across 3 different situations
2- to see if helping strangers varies across cultures
3- to identify characteristics of the communities in which strangers are more/less likely to be helped
Levine procedure
Dropped pen measure-
Confederate walked towards someone alone, dropped pen 10-15ft away. Ps classed as helping if they called to confederate or picked up pen for them
Hurt leg measure-
Confederate walked with a heavy limp + leg brace, dropped magazines and struggled to pick them up within 20ft of a participant. Classed as helping if helped with or without offering
Blind person procedure-
Confederate wore dark glasses + white cane, walked into road when traffic light went green. Helping behaviour = someone told them lights were green (bare minimum)
