Chaney Flashcards
Aim of chaneys study
To investigate whether the funhaler can provide positive reinforcement to adherence of using an inhaler
Ps of chaneys study
32 children
Age 1.5 - 6
From Australia (ethnocentric = cannot be generalised)
Chaney + consent?
Informed consent given by parents
Ted Martin take notes!
Chaney procedure
Children given a funhaler for 2 weeks
Parents did self reports (biased) and were contacted via phone randomly to take snap shots of whether they had used the funhaler the day before
After 2 weeks parents visited to do a questionnaire of funhaler usage
What were the insentives of the funhaler
Ball
Spinner
Whistle
Results of chaneys study
Funhaler associated with improved compliance
73% of parents always successfully used funhaler
80% took recommended dose with funhaler vs 50% with basic bitch inhaler
Conclusion of chaneys study
Problems using an inhaler was helped with the funhaler
= incentives improve adherence
Chaney method and design
Field (in homes) and repeated measures
Strengths of Chaney
Useful - suggests behaviourist techniques can be used to improve adherence to medical regimes
Ethical - informed consent gathered
Ecological validity - behaviour took place with parents in home, which is where it would naturally occur
Weaknesses of Chaney
Demand characteristics and social desirability bias - parents do not want to seem bad or neglectful when filling out self-report, and gave informed consent / repeated measures so know the IV
Generalisability - small sample of Australian asthmatic children (niche market)
