Casey Flashcards
Aim of Casey
To conduct a longitudinal study to investigate delayed gratification 40 years from when participants were first tested
The participants of Casey
562 four-year-olds
From Stanford university nursery
155 of original sample studied in their 20s
135 studied in their 30s
How many participants did the study end with (casey)
59 participated in exp1 go/no-go
27 agreed to do exp2 - fmri
Casey procedure
Hot go/no go task
Ps asked to click when they saw a happy face and not to click when they saw a fearful face
Cool go/no go task
Pe asked to click when they saw a specific gender (go task) and not click when other gender (no-go task)
Casey result
Low delayers made more errors on the hot tasks (emotion) than the cool task (gender)
Made more mistakes on no-go that go - struggled to resist temptation to click
More activity in the ventral striatum (impulsive behaviour) and less in the inferior frontal gyrus (self control / composure) for low-delayers
Design of Casey
Longitudinal quasi experiment
