Blakemore And Cooper Flashcards
Aim of blakemore and cooper
To investigate the biological and behavioural effects of a restricted visual experience and whether brain development occurs due to nurture
Blakemore and cooper sample
Kittens from birth
Blakemore and Cooper procedure
From beth kittens were housed in a completely dark room from two weeks old, they manipulated the visual experience of the kittens. They were placed into a cylinder which was 46 cm in diameter and 2 m high for 5 hours a day. The cylinder was decorated with either horizontal or black and white vertical stripes. The kittens vision was limited to 130°. After 7.5 months they were released into a well furnished room.
Blakemore and Cooper results
Once the kittens were removed from the cylinder, they often bumped into things and showed no startle response
kittens navigate through touch
All showed behaviour blindness, could not see things oriented the opposite way to their environment
Most effects seemed to disappear after 10 hours in the world that room however, the tracking of moving objects remain jerky, and they were still clumsy
Blakemore and Cooper brain results
Two kittens appeared to suffer from physical blindness, and that neurons would show patterns in the same orientation as a red environment
Blakemore and Cooper conc.
Early visual experiences can modify kittens perception in terms of their behaviour and biology
Brain plasticity can occur
