Gould Flashcards
Gould aim
Gould reviewed research by Yerkes
Yerkes aim: to show psychology wasn’t a soft science, and you could measure things scientifically (intelligence)
Gould sample
1.750,000 US Army recruits
White and black Americans and European immigrants
Gould tests of intelligence (army alpha)
The army alpha was designed for literate recruits
It was an eight part test, including analogies
number, sequences,
multiple choice questions
Supposed to be culturally fair and not biased(it was)
Gould test of iltelligence army beta
The army baiter was designed for illiterate recruits, add people who failed the alpha test
It was a seven part test, including picture completion tasks
English instructions
Three Parts of the test required written answers.
Gould individual examination
If participants failed both tests, that was a spoken exam
Gould test scores
Psychologists would grade each man from a to E
Yerkes determined:
Recruits with grade C should be marked low, average intelligence and would be recommended the rank ordinary private
Gould results
The average mental age of white American adults was 13, which was just above the level, expected of a ‘moron’
Goulds criticism of yerkes intelligence testing
The tests were culturally biased
The better test required pencil work and knowledge of numbers. However, some participants had never held a pencil before
Gould research method
Quasi - ps could not choose their ethnicity or intelligence
