MORAY Flashcards
Aim ?
To rigorously test cherrys findings on attention and investigate what types of message would penetrate an attentional block & be paid attention to by participants
Sample ?
Undergrad students and research workers
No sample size for exp 1 but 12 in exp2 and 2 groups of 14 in exp2
What was conducted ?
3 lab experiments
All dichotic listening tasks
Apparatus ?
Brennel mark Iv stereophonic tape recorder
Passages recorded by make speaker
Loudness of each message about 60db above ps hearing threshold
What happened in experiment 1
A short list of simple words spoken 35 times as rejected message . At the end of shadowing task, ps asked to recall all they could remember. 30 secs after, participants completed a recognition test.
The recognition test ?
Ps shown a list of 21 words which were split in to 3 categories but the ps didn’t know . 7 from passage shadowed. 7 from rejected message and 7 from neither.
Results of experiment 1
7 shadowed 4.9
7 rejected 1.9
7 neither 2.6
Conclusion for experiment 2
Almost none of the words from the rejected message are able to breK the in attention all barrier
Aim of exp 2
Moray wanted to find out what would break the inattentional barrier. Designed to see if a message with strong enough meaning to the participant would break the barrier
Procedure if exp 2
2 passages of light fiction heard, in each ear. Read in male monotone voice. Passages had instructions. 3 of passages had none affective cues and 3 had affective cues.
Results from exp 2
Affective cue heard in rejected message 20/39 times
Non affective cue heard 4/36 times
Aim of experiment 3
Moray wanted to find out the effect of instructions on identifying material within a rejected message
Procedure of exp 3
Group 1 told they would be asked questions about the shadowed message
Group 2 told specifically to remember as many digits as possible
Results from exp 3
No difference between mean scores of digits recalled correctly between 2 set conditions
Overall conclusion
Important messages can penetrate the barrier
