GRANT Flashcards
Aim?
Investigate context dependent memory effects on both recall and recognition
Participants?
8 psychology students acted as experimenters and each of these 8 were required to recruit 5 friends as ps. 39 ps
What was the recall test ?
Test began with 10 short answer questions
What was the recognition test?
16 multiple choice questions which had 4 options to choose from
Conclusions ?
Students are more likely to perform better in exams if they study for them with minimal background noise as it will not be present during actual testing
Results for recall test
Studied in Silence recalled in silence- 6.7
Studied in silence Recalled in noise - 4.6
Results of recognition
Recalled in silence studied in noise - 14.3
Recalled in noise studied in silence- 12.7
Ethics
Informed consent
Briefed on task
Full debrief
Involvement voluntary so consent
Validity
Due to highly controlled lab exp it has high design validity
Procedure and apparatus was standardised & ps tested individually
The noise was from uni canteen so normal to what students hear so high ecological validity
Useful ness debate
Can suggest to students the benefits of studying in silence . However usefulness of this can be cancelled out of all students revise in silence , you lose your advantage.
