BLAKEMORE AND COOPER Flashcards
Aim
To investigate how being raised in a visually restrictive environment would effect the visual brain development of cats
Procedure
New born kittens raised Ina dark room for nearly 2 weeks . Kitten is placed in a dark cylinder for 5 hours a day for 5 moths, only able to see horizontal or vertical stripes , wore large collar so couldn’t see them selves . After 5 months out in to a well lit room and observes
Results
Navigate way round using touch , frightened when they reached the edge of surface they were standing on.
Only saw the stripes they were in the cylinder
Conclusion
Study shows that the development of the brain responds to the environment it has experienced
Advantages of used kittens
Easier to control and can’t show demand characteristics or change behaviour
Nature nurture
Nature - provided kittens with neurones with a preferred orientation but the restricted visual environment in which the kittens were raised in meant that nurture has a strong effect
