CASEY Flashcards
Aim
The find out if participants were low delayers on the marshmallow test still struggled with resisting tempatiationin adulthood
Sample ?
59 participants, all from original marshmallows test
Split in to 2 groups based on marshmallows test
What we low delayers
Ps who consistently gave in to temptation and couldn’t delay gratification for long
What were high delayers
Ps who consistently resisted temptation and could delay gratification
Procedure of exp 1
Ps completed 2 versions of go/no go task . Cool version of the task - m&f stimuli , one sex presented as go one presented as no go . Ps instructed to press a button when go is presented and leave it for no go . 160 trials per run. Hot task same but Happy and fearful expressions
Procedure 2
fMRI used to examine neural correlates of delay of gratification. It was anticipated that low delayers would show diminished activity in the right prefrontal cortex compared to high delayers. 27 ps from exp 1 took part, asked to complete hot task however differences in times and apparatus
Key findings from exp 1
Ps performed with a high level of accuracy for correctly responding to go trials
Accuracy for no go trials was more variable with low delayers committing more false alarms than high delayers
Key findings from exp 2
Overall accuracy rates for the hot go no go tasks were uniformly high for go trials with more variable performance to no go
Conclusions
Individuals who at 4 has difficulty in delaying gratification have more difficulty as adults in suppressing responses to positive cues than those who don’t.
