CHANEY Flashcards
What was the aim of Chaney ?
The aim was to see if the use of the funhaler increases compliance rates in children.
Also to see of the quality of use is improved with funhaler.
What were the participants in Chaney ?
32 children from Australia (aged between 1.5&6 years)
22 boys 10 girls
What was the experimental design of Chaney ?
Repeated measures
Field experiment
What was the procedure of Chaney ?
1.questionnaire given to parents to find out about current inhaler use, all parents sign consent form. 2. Parents given funhaler & instructed to use with child. Parents would be contacted at random times to see if funhaler had been used. After 2 weeks parents given another questionnaire to access behaviour towards funhaler.
How was the funhaler different to a normal inhaler ?
A steady breath would activate a spinning disk & whistle on funhaler.
What was the % of parents who successfully ,educated child using existing inhaler compared to fun haler?
Existing - 10%
Funhaler - 73%
What was the % of children having problem with being unwilling to using mask for each inhaler ?
Existing - 58%
Funhaler - 3%
What was the % of children with attitude of pleasure toward each inhaler?
Existing- 10%
Funhaler- 68%
What was the conclusion from Chaneys study ?
From questionnaires it would appear that the funhaler led to an increase in use. Parents were also less likely to give up when using funhaler.
What would’ve helped eliminate order effects in Chaney ?
Counterbalancing - could have been achieved by having half the participants use existing inhaler first followed by funhaler. And vice versa.
What ethical guidelines did Bandura uphold?
Assumed all ethical guidelines were adhered to, however parents not told about funhaler at the start.
What was the validity of Chaney’s study?
Self report could affect validity of research due to social desirability, parents won’t admit failure of using funhaler as is unaccepted by society. Means research could be measuring what parents think is good behaviour rather than what they are actually like.
What extraneous variables could effect Chaneys validity of research ?
Levels of perseverance may change between families, parent may be tired or not as strict.
We also don’t know how efficient parents are at using the inhaler.
What is the reliability for Chaneys study ?
Questionnaire same for each participant&length of time using funhaler meaning procedure is standardised and replicable.
However study only conducted with 32 kids which raised question whether sample was larger enough to establish a consistent effect.
How does Chaney link to individual/situational debate ?
May be an individual difference in amount of inhaler use&effectiveness of how it is used. However study is clearly looking at the role of situation in determining behaviour.
