what is cotrads syndrome ?
patient has a delusional belief that they are dead and is ususally associated with severe depression
chronic depression that is not fulfilling the criteria for major depression ?
dysthymia
what is adjustment disorder with depressed mood ?
mild to moderate symptoms off depression
occurred and disappeared within 6 months of significant stressor
what is the first line treatment for mild to moderate depression that has failed intial interventions ?
SSRI

CBT

what is the first line management for moderate to severe depression ?

severe depression with life threatening
what is the difference between bipolar 1 and 2 ?
1 - mania has occurred on at least one occasion
2 - hypomania has occurred on at least one occasion
what is hypomania ?
elevated or irritable state sustained for at least 4 days
what is mania ?
elevated or irritable sustained for 1 week
what are the variants of bipolar disorder ?
rapid cycling - 4 or more episodes per year
cyclothymia - milder form of bipolar , doesn’t meet the criteria
what is the kindling effect ?
initial episodes of a mood disorder are more likely to be influenced by psychosocial stressors compared to later episodes
