Monogastric Digestive System Flashcards
Prehension
The action of bringing in food
Organs involved in prehension
Hands (only humans have hands included)
Lips
Incisor
Tongue
Mastication
The act of mechanically breaking down food
Organs involved in mastication
Incisors Canines Premolars/Molars Tongue Salivary gland Esophagus
Digestion
the process by which large, complex nutrient molecules are broken down into simpler molecules capable of being used by the organism for food
Parts of the monogastric digestive system
Hands Mouth Esophagus Small Intestine Cecum Large Intestine
Monogastric digestive system’s small intestine function
enzymatic digestion of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats; absorption of end products of digestion (nutrients)
The small intestine is split into 3 parts
Duodenum
Jejunum
Ileum
Duodenum function
Most digestion occurs
Jejunum function
Some digestion and some absorption occur
Ileum function
Mostly aborption (of nutrients)
Bile
Made in liver, stored in gall bladder, active in small intestine, emulsifies to aid in digestion
Cecum function
Essentially non-functioning in many monogastrics
Large intestine function
Bacterial activity, water absorption, waste storage
