Animal Genetics Flashcards
Phenotype
The outward, physical apperance of an animal
Genotype
Genetic makeup of an animal
Environmental Factors that may affect the appearance of an animal
- Quantity and quality of feed
- Climate conditions
- Exposure to parasites and diseases
- Type of terrain
- Producer’s control over animal
Natural Selection
Survival of the fittest; strongest, healthiest, and most powerful survives to spread its genetics
Controlled Breeding
Producer crosses 2 parents based on desired outcome
Outcrossing
Breeding purebred animals with unrelated purebred animals
Cross Breeding
Breeding animals of the same species but of a different breed
Hybrid Vigor (Heterosis)
Biological phenomenon which causes crossbreeds to out produce the average of their parents
Stronger animals
Chromosome
A long protein strand that allows specific genetic information or traits to be built into or engineered into the genes of a species
Allele
a pair of genes that control a specific trait
Monohybrid cross
for the estimation of predicted outcome for a single trait
Genetic Mutation
Genetic traits not passed on as intended and defects happen
Abnormality
Similar to a mutation, only it is caused by something in the environment
Differentiation
As the embryo begins to grow and develop, cells differentiate
Some cells develop into muscle, bone, skin, ect
Example of hybrid vigor
