What does it mean to be Intersex
people born with biological characteristics that are not typically male or female
Why does it hurt to be intersex
bcs even though every body differs, there is still a social structure that classifies us based on our parts
why does it matter that social structures exist?
because social structure is what sorts people into groups and groups always have ingroup/out group characterisitics
What is deviance
Deviant label always sorts people into an outgroup
what is stratification
people outside of our social class group are often frames as “other” or part of an outgroup
race
people that look different can be seen as “other”
gender
a social concept related to presentation of self
what is the definition of sex
biological construct that is determined by physical and genetic characteristics
what is a biological theory
center on the idea there is no social aspect to gender, only sex
what is gender essentialism
when ppl are sorted into tasks/roles based on biological sex
what does the biological theory ignore
other social/technological changes that have happened
What is functionalism
not purely biological but based on biology to come degree
2 types of functionalism
classical and newerish
what is classical functionalism thinking
gender roles help sustain society by preforming essential tasks
what is newerish functionalism thinking
roles have evolved/ somewhat decoupled from biological gender and roles have grown more equal
