Racial group-
Socially consturcted category that distinguishes people by selected inherited physical characteristics
Ethnic group
group of ppl characterized by cultural traits that reflect origin and language
Minority group
- a group that is subordinate to the dominant group in terms of the distribution of social power
Stereotypes-
widely held and oversimplified beliefs about the character and behaviour all members of a group that seldom correspond to the facts
‘Prejudice
: an attitude of prejudgment of people or situations, usually negative and based on stereotypes
Scapegoating;
a physiological explanation of prejudice that involves blaming another person or group for one’s own problems
Projection;
; a physiological explanation of prejudice that suggest that ppl transfer their own unacceptable traits or behaviors to a vulnerable group
Discrimination
unequal and unfair treatment of people on the basis of their membership to a particular group
Institutional discrimination
the continuing exclusion of oppression of a group as a criteria established by an institution
Workplace-not getting accepted due to skin colour
Racism
- the belief that one racial group is superior to others, typically manifested through prejudice and discrimination
Integration
When ethnicity becomes insignificant and everyone can freely and fully participate in the social, economic, and political mainstream
Assimilation
when groups forsake their own clture to become a part of a different culture
The melting pot model
focuses on the idea that each group contributes something to the overall culture but also absorbs from other people
the anglo conformity model
is focused on the minority group losing their identity and merging
african slaves were forced to become christian and adhere to american cultural traditions
Segregation
when a group is separated from the main body of society
