Module 5: Lesson 5 - Self-appraisal Flashcards

1
Q

What is a self-appraisal?

A

Reflection on their own teaching practices and planning is important for teachers in order to continue their professional development. When a teacher can self-assess, they can become more aware of their own strengths and recognize areas where they could improve their knowledge and skills. This allows them to take suitable actions and consider professional development in order to improve any weak areas.

The self-appraisement of a lesson plan can allow teachers to improve their planning and consequently, the overall lesson experience for the learner. They can also anticipate any potential issues that may arise when teaching the lesson plan they have created.

Q

What key information is required on a self-appraisal form?

A
  • Overview: The example self-appraisal form begins with information about the lesson. This usually comprises the teacher’s name, the date the lesson plan was written, the focus of the lesson (e.g. grammar, skills, pronunciation, etc.) and the age and level of learners.
  • Self-appraisal criteria: the lesson plan is sufficient; it’s comprehensive enough; the stages, timings, activities, and so on are suitable.
  • Strengths of the lesson plan: This is a place to write all the positive points of the lesson plan. It’s a space to reflect on what you think your proposed lesson plan does well, and how it can effectively meet your learners’ needs during the class.
  • Areas to improve: The focus is on recognizing where your lesson plan isn’t as strong as it could be and thinking objectively about how you can improve it.
