Module 1: Lesson 4 - Practical considerations Flashcards
Name some practical considerations when teaching online.
- Managing a schedule
- Working across time zones
- Working for a company versus working for yourself
- Using technology
- Taking international payments
- Doing your taxes
Why is managing your schedule as an online teacher challenging?
- Time zone differences
- Holidays globally & significance thereof
- No set work structure (8-5pm)
What is the best way to get started?
Working on a company platform to get some initial experience.
It can be a valuable way of working out exactly what kind of online teaching you want to concentrate on and it will give an insight on how much time you need to prepare lessons, the materials that you can use and what timetable or time zone best fits your lifestyle.
What is meant by ‘false freelancer’?
Someone who is technically freelance (in terms of their contract), but only teaches through established online schools.
What are the main pieces of technology you need to teach online?
- Computer
- A good internet connection
- A good headset with microphone
- A good webcam
What are two considerations to keep in mind when it comes to payment and tax?
- Receiving payments: international bank transfers, financial applications, money transfer services.
- Paying tax: you will probably have an obligation to pay tax and social security in the country where you live. You will normally have to be registered as a freelance worker (or as a business), and you have to submit your accounts on a quarterly, half yearly, or yearly basis (as well as making tax payments).
