Emotion
-a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one’s circumstances, mood, or relationships with others.
-Has 3 components
3 components of emotion
expressive behaviors, physiological arousal, conscious experience
Expressive behavior
facial expressions, body language, action impulses
Physiological arousal
ANS (autonomic nervous system) physiology, “heart pounding” when anxious
Conscious experience
thoughts, feelings, appraisals (response to situations)
Discrete emotions
a set of basic emotions that are universally recognizable through facial expressions and are not influenced by culture or language
Basic emotion theory
-a certain number of discrete emotions that evolve from nature
-universal regardless of gender, culture, childhood
-biological and evolutionary basis
Constructivist theory
-theory that emotions are abstract concepts that are shaped by the brain and influenced by culture and context
-Valence, arousal, appraisals, bodily responses + learned emotional concepts→ emotions
Facial expressions characteristics
-Many facial expressions are cross-cultural/universal
-People blind from birth exhibit the same common facial expressions
-Facial action coding system
How do we perceive emotion in others
Facial expressions, gestures and body positions, language, vocal tones, context
Emotion regulation
Attempts to influence which emotions we have, when we have them, and how these emotions are experienced/expressed
Cognitive reappraisal
-changing the way you think about a situation to change its emotional impact
-Shown to be more effective than suppression
Expressive suppresion
masking the outward expression of emotion
