Module 2 Section 1 - Organelles Working Together Flashcards
where are protein made
ribosomes
what do ribosomes on the rough endoplasmic reticulum make
proteins that are excreted or attached to the cell membrane
what do free ribosomes in the cytoplasm make
proteins that stay in the cytoplasm
what happens to new proteins that are produced at the rough er
new proteins are folded and processed (e.g. sugar chain added) in the rough er
what happens after proteins are folded and processed in the rough er
they are transported from the rough er to the golgi apparatus in vesicles
what happens at the golgi apparatus
proteins may undergo further processing (e.g. sugar chains are trimmed or more are added)
after further processing in the golgi apparatus what happens to the proteins
they enter more vesicles to be transported around the cells. e.g. glycoproteins in mucus move to the cell surface and are secreted
what are the network of protein threads in the cytoplasm called
the cytoskeleton
in eukaryotic cells the protein threads are arranged as….
microfilaments(small solid strands) and microtubules(tiny protein cylinders)
the cytoskeleton has four main functions
-microfilaments and microtubules support cells organelles, keeping them in position
-help strengthen the cell and maintain shape
-responsible for movement of materials
-can cause the cell to move
