-partially permeable barriers between the cell and its environment

what is compartmentalisation?
A
formation of separate membrane-bound areas in cells

why is compartmentalisation important?
A
vital to cells metabolism which involves different reactions:
-allows chemical reactions to happen in the conditions they require without damaging vital cell components

what is the fluid mosaic model?
A
-phospholipids move around within layer (fluid)
-proteins (of different size+ shape) embedded in bilayer like a mosaic
