Module 11-Cardiovascular System Flashcards
bluish tinge to the tips of the extremities
Acrocyanosis
strangling pain in the chest area
Angina pectoris
procedure done to view blood vessels, involving the injection of a radiopaque substance into the selected blood vessel to produce an image
Angiogram
condition in which normal rhythm is absent
Arrhythmia
process of listening for heart sounds
Auscultation
pressure of blood against the inner walls of the blood vessels
Blood pressure (BP)
condition in which the heart rate is slower than normal
Bradycardia
discoloration of the skin that results from the breaking of superficial blood vessels with the release of blood into the tissue
Bruise
abnormal sound heard during auscultation
Bruit
condition in which the heart is enlarged
Cardiomegaly
a diagnostic procedure in which the blood vessels of the heart are visualized
Coronary angiography
condition in which there is an abnormal rhythm to the heartbeat
Dysrhythmia
use of sound waves to produce an image of the different parts of the heart
Echocardiogram
record of the electrical activity of the heart
Electrocardiogram (ECG)
produced by an abnormal opening and closing of the valves of the heart
Murmur
awareness of an abnormally strong or rapid beating of the heart
Palpitation
instrument used to measure blood pressure
Sphygmomanometer
instrument used to “view” or hear the sounds produced in the chest
Stethoscope
condition in which the heart beats faster than normal
Tachycardia
dilation or widening of a blood vessel
Aneurysm
stopping of the heartbeat
Arrest
hardening of the walls of arteries
Arteriosclerosis
inflammation of an artery
Arteritis
fatty deposits in between layers of the linings of the arteries are hardened
Atherosclerosis
condition in which there is death of tissue due to lack of blood supply through the vessels
Avascular necrosis
inflammation of the inside lining of the heart caused by bacteria
Bacterial endocarditis
heart defect that a child is born with
Congenital heart defect
condition in which the heart fails to pump blood adequately, and there is resultant congestion or backup of blood
Congestive heart failure
form of heart disease resulting from disease in the lungs
Cor pulmonale
disease of the arteries involved in coronary circulation
Coronary artery disease
ball of clotted blood that is carried within the bloodstream
Embolus
sudden seizure of pain and inability of the heart to function due to interference in circulation
Heart attack
normal path of electrical conduction through the heart is blocked, preventing a normal contraction of the heart
Heart block
tumor consisting of blood vessels; sometimes referred to as an angioma
Hemangioma
elevation of the blood pressure above normal limits
Hypertension
condition of low blood pressure
Hypotension
necrosis or death of a portion of the heart muscle
Myocardial infarction
decrease in the blood supply to the muscle of the heart
Myoscardial ischemia
inflammation of a vein
Phlebitis
inflammation of a vein that results in the formation of a blood clot
Thrombophlebitis
blood clot attached to the wall inside a blood vessel
Thrombus
surgical reshape of a blood vessel; a procedure where a small catheter with a balloon end is inserted into the vessel
Angioplasty
surgery done on blood vessels for the purpose of placing a graft that will bypass an occluded blood vessel
Bypass surgery
act of restoring consciousness by forcing air into the lungs and forcing blood from the heart
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
stopping the uncontrolled twitching of the heart through the use of medications or electric shock
Defibrillation
surgical removal of a blood clot
Embolectomy
procedure in which the heart of one person is put into the body of another person
Heart transplant
injection into a vein for treatment of disease
Intravenous therapy
surgical procedure during which the heart is opened
Open-heart surgery
implanting of an artificial device that keeps the rate of the heart in a desirable range
Pacemaker implant
opening into a vein
Phlebotomy
puncture of a vein with a needle or insertion of a catheter
Venipuncture
