The absence of all sensation, especially sensitivity to pain, as induced by an anesthetic substance, by hypnosis, or as occurs with traumatic or pathological damage to nerve tissue
anesthesia
A decreased or absent sensation of pain
analgesia
A series of involuntary, rhythmic, muscular contractions and relaxations; when you quickly dorsiflex the foot and maintain it in that position - you note that the foot “beats” several times on your hand; not a normal finding
clonus
Tic, involuntary muscle contractions or twitchings of small muscle groups
fasciculation
The ability to recognize writing on the palm of the hand
graphesthesia
A reduced sensitivity to pain
hypalgia
A heightened sensitivity to pain
hyperalgesia
A diminished sense of touch
hypoesthesia
An abnormal or pathological increase in sensitivity to sensory stimuli, as of the skin to touch or the ear to sound
hyperesthesia
A skin sensation, such as burning, prickling, itching, or tingling, with no apparent physical cause
paresthesia
The ability to touch the tip of the thumb to the tips of the other fingers of the same hand
opposition
A transient disturbance of cerebral function caused by an excessive discharge of neurons; AKA convulsion
seizure
The ability to recognize an object by its feel
stereognosis
A temporary loss of consciousness (fainting)
syncope
Involuntary, rhythmical alternating movement that may affect the muscles of any part of the body, caused by the rapid alternating contraction and relaxation of muscles
