MOB Flashcards
Williamson turn pocedure, Pros/Cons
1.Wheel hard over towards the casualty
2.once 60° from original heading, put wheel hard the other way
3.When 20° short of reciprical, put rudder amidships
+. Makes good original track line
+. Good in reduced visibility
+. Simple
-. Takes the ship farther away from the scene of the incident
-. Slow procedure.
Types of MOB Situation
Immediate Action
The person overboard is noticed from the bridge and action is taken immediately.
Delayed Action
An eyewitness reports the person to the bridge and action is initiated with some delay.
Person-Missing Action
The person is reported to the bridge as missing.
Factors influencing a successful MOB recovery comprise
weather conditions,
seawater temperature,
day or night operation,
experience of crew members,
geographic location,
number of search units,
time delay in the alarm being raised
condition of the man when falling.
Some factors that will affect the speed of recovery include:
- Ship’s manoeuvring characteristics
- Wind direction and sea state
- Crew’s experience and level of training
- Capability of the engine plant
- Location of the incident
- Visibility level
- Recovery technique
- Possibility of having other vessels assist.
Anderson Turn Procedure, Pros/Cons
Single Turn, only useful in immediate action
Wheel hard over towards casualty
Once 250º from original course Rudder amidships, stopping manoevre initiated
+. Fastest recovery method
+. Good for ships with tight turning characteristics
+. Used most by ships with considerable power
-. Very difficult for a single-screw vessel
-. Difficult because approach to person is not straight.
Sharnov Turn
Not to be used in immediate action
1 Rudder hard over
2 Once 240º from original course, Rudder hard the other way
3 Once 20º from reciprical, rudder amidships
+. Will take vessel back into her wake
+. Less distance is covered, saving time
- Does not cover the full wake
Would you manoeuver the yacht to windward or leeward of the casualty
Windward, by a 100m or more, assuming you are launching the Rescue Boat
Provides a lee
Allows you to drift towards them

Factors influencing sweep lengths for a search pattern
Object looking for - Person, Liferaft, boat etc
Visability
Weather
Sea State
Height of eye
Sector search
Drive through the datum, 1 sweep length, turn 60º, another sweep length, Turn again, to make a triangle, back to the datum.
Repeat 2 more times to make 3 triangles, covering the area.
2nd time, shift 30º over and repeat
Sweep length/ radius is usually between 2-5M according to IAMSAR
Expanding square
From Datum, drive 1 leg, S , Turn 90, drive S, Turn 90
Drive 2S, turn 90, 2S, turn 90
3S, Turn 90…
Search pattern for Unseen MOB
Creeping line search back to Datum
After completing your turn and on reciprocal course
Should be aircraft searching side to side as ship advances
Can use tenders to sweep side to side
Parallel search with tenders in a straight line may be more practical
How could you get a unconcious person out of the water quickly in rough conditions
launch a life raft, pull them into that, tow it until the weather improves
