What does 100 A 1 mean?
100 Suitable for sea going service
A Accepted into class in good and efficient condition
1 Good and efficient Mooring equipment
How would you manouevre the yacht off of the dock, when strong winds are pushing on?
Use tugs, safest way
At what depth does squat start?
Signs to look for?
1.5 times the greatest depth. ie, 4m draft, 6m depth squat would begin
Vibrations
Increased height of bow and stern wave
Vessel would feel less responsive
What causes squat
What are its effects
In shallow water, the water displaced by the hull is not so easily replaced, keeping the water near the hull at a lower pressure, allowing the ship to squat down.
In the low pressure, the rudder and propeller become less efficient, making the vessel less responsive.
Can cause sudden sheering at very shallow depths
More guidance on the effects of interaction?
MGN 199
MCA system for calculation anchor chain length?
number of shackles =1.5 times the square root of the depth
16m deep, = 6 shackles
What orders would you give to alter to starboard avoiding another vessel
Officer : Starboard 10
Helmsman, Starboard 10
He turns the wheel
Helmsman : Starboard 10 on.
Wait until about 15º short of the intened new course
Officer: Meet Her (check swing of the vessels head)
Officer : steady (reduce swing)
Officer: Steady as she goes
Helmsman: steady on 050º
How do you know if your ECDIS is your primary means of navigation
Listed in your Cargo Ship Safety Equipment Form E
How does a rudder know when to stop moving
A wheel connection and a rudder connection to a rheostat.
When the wheel turns it creates a difference in voltage between the connections.
The difference creates a current which creates positive pressure in one ram and negative in the other, moving the rudder.
as the rudder moves, the voltage changes until the rudder connection and wheel connection match
What is a rheostat
an adjustable resistor
Which book contains time zones for different locations?
ALRS vol 2
What is the geographical range of a light?
the maximum distance a light can reach an observer, determined by height of eye, height of the light and curvature of the earth
What needs to be reported to the MAIB?

o The loss of a person from a ship.
o The loss, presumed loss or abandonment of a ship.
o Material damage⁵ to a ship.
o The ship being unfit to proceed, or requires flag state approval or a condition of class before
it may proceed.
o At sea, a breakdown of the ship, requiring towage.
o The stranding or disabling of a ship, or the involvement of a ship in a collision.
o Material damage⁵ to marine infrastructure external of a ship that could seriously endanger
the safety of the ship, another ship or any individual.
