mnsr 30 - speech production Flashcards
-
voice phonation is generated by
brenulis law ( fluid velocity increases , pressure decreases ) within the larynx. Speech/ fart lol produces vibartopns via brenuelis law
the human voice is generated by
controlled flow of air through the vocal tract
periodic opening and closing of the vibration in the vocal cords
creates pressure wave in air which travels up the vocal tract
in laryngitis
the vocal tracts are swollen due to inflammation to irritation, less likely to vibrate and result in hoarse or weak voice
the vocal tracts are
tubes closed at the largenal ends and open at the mouth
the nature of the sound emerging from the mouth depends on
resonant properties of the vocal tracts
a cylindrical tube opened at both ends
sound travels down the tube, reflected strongly if the open end coincides with the anti node wave
as the reflected wave travels back down the tube
it interacts with incident wave and set up standing wave ( if the tube length = an integer multiple of half the wavelength)
the sound frequencies that set up the standing waves within the tube are
natural frequencies of vibrations ( NFV ) or resonant frequencies.
Fundamental and higher harmonic frequencies
lowest NFV is called
fundamental frequencies ( 1st harmonic )
next integer mutiple nfv is
2nd harmonic frequencies and 1st overtone.
if the tube is closed at one end
the nfv coincidence with frequencies that produce a node at the closed end and anti- node at the open end
closed tubes only generate harmonics that corresponds to
odd integers multiples of the fundamental frequencies.
only the frequencies that can pass down the tube corresponds with
resonant frequencies and all the others will get left out.
the frequency spectrum of the voiced sounds clearly shows nfs of vocal tract. the peak are called
formant frequencies graphed by voice spectrogram
