Hip Flexion Grades 3-5
Short sitting- thighs fully supported on table and legs hanging over the edge. Arms may be used for trunk stability.
Hip Flexion Grade 2
Side lying- testing limb uppermost and supported by therapist; trunk in neutral rotation; lowermost limb flexed for stability
Hip Flexion Grades 0-1
Supine- with knee flexed and leg supported by therapist
Hip Flexion, Abduction, And External Rotation with Knee Flexion Grades 3-5
Short sitting- thighs fully supported on table and legs hanging over side, arms may be used to for trunk stability. Then slide heel up shin of other leg
Hip Flexion, Abduction, and External Rotation with Knee Flexion Grade 0-2
Supine- heel of limb to be tested is placed on contralateral shin
Hip Extension (ALL) Grades 3-5
Prone
Hip Extension (ALL) Grade 2
Side lying: test limb uppermost, knee straight and supported by therapist, lowermost limb flexed for stability
Hip Extension (ALL) Grades 0-1
Prone
Hip Extension (isolate Gluteus Maximus) Grades 3-5
Prone- with knee flexed to 90*, hip abducted and externally rotated
Hip Extension (isolate Gluteus Maximus) Grade 2
Side-lying: test limb uppermost, knee flexed and supported by therapist. Lowerlimb hip and knee flexed to stability
Hip Extension (isolate Gluteus Maximus) Grades 0-1
Prone
Hip Abduction Grades 3-5
Side-lying: test limb uppermost, hip slightly extended beyond midline, pelvis rotated slightly forward. Lowermost limb flexed for stability

Hip Abduction from a flexed position Grades 3-5
Side-lying: test limb uppermost flexed to 45* and lies across lowermost limb with foot resting on table

Long sitting- supporting trunk with hands behind body on table; trunk may lean backward up to 45*
