What is the MLC?
The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) protects the rights and welfare of seafarers by setting standards for working and living conditions
What are some key parts of MLC?
- Minimum age
- Employment agreements (SEA)

What are the Maximum Hours of Work?
- 14 hours in any 24hr period
- 72 hours in any 7 day period
What are the Minimum Hours of Rest?
- 10 hours in any 24 hour period
- 77 hours in any 7 day period
What is the requirement for division of rest periods?
Split into no more than two periods with at least one 6 hours long
What is a Seafarers Employment Agreement (SEA)
A legally binding contract between the seafarer and employer outlining the terms and conditions of employment to ensure that their rights are protected

- Leave entitlement
- Duration of emplyment
- Termination conditions
What is the Validity of a Maritime Labour Certificate?
- 5 years
- Intermediate inspection between 2nd/3rd years
- Issued by classification society on behalf of flagstate
