What is ISPS
International Ship and Port Facility Security Code
What is the purpose of ISPS?
To increase the security of ships and port facilites in response to 9/11. some objectives include:
1. Assess and detect threats
2. Assign roles and responsibilites
3. Develop security plans
4. Implement security measures
Which chapter of SOLAS was ISPS adopted under?
Chapter XI - Special measures to enhance maritime security
What are the different security levels?
- Level 1: Normal - regular operations for the ship or port facility
- Level 2: Heightened - increased risk of a security incident
- Level 3: Exceptional - Probable or imminent risk of a security incident
How often must security drills be carried out?
At least once every 3 months
If the crew changes by more than 25% then a drill must be completed within 7 days
What are some of the Ship Security Officer responsibilities?
- Undertake regular security inspections
- reporting deficiencies to the company security officer
- Enhancing secruity awareness onboard
- ensuring adequate training has been provided
What are some documents required under the ISPS Code?
- International Ship Security Certificate (ISSC) - 5 year valid
- Ship Security Plan - outlines security procedures
- Declaration of Security (DoS) - Establishes an agreement between a ship and port facility or another ship regarding security measures to be implemented
