Mitosis Flashcards
What’s the purpose of Mitosis?
Mitosis makes new cells for growth and repair.
Remember the ‘T’ in MiTosis as standing for ‘Twins’ because the cells produced via mitosis are clones of each other.
Yah just a fun fact for u
T for Twins
Mitosis is an example of ________ reproduction.
Asexual
In a cell that’s not dividing, the DNA is ______ ___ into long strings.
Spread out.
What happens when a cell gets a signal to divide?
The DNA copies itself and forms X-Shaped Chromosomes. Each ‘arm’ of the chromosome is an exact duplicate of the other.
In the cell that’s about to divide, after the DNA copies itself, what do the chromosomes then do?
The chromosomes line up at the centre of the cell and cell fibres pull them apart.
When the cell fibres pull the chromosomes apart, what happens to the arms of chromosomes?
The X shaped chromosome is pulled apart, one arm goes to one side of the cell, and the other arm goes to the other side of the cell.
How are the nuclei of the 2 new cells formed?
Membranes from around each of the sets of chromosomes form the nuclei of the 2 new cells.
Final step of Mitosis?
Cytoplasm divides.
