Meiosis Flashcards
How many chromosomes do gametes have?
- Not 23 pairs. Just 23.
What’s a gamete? Give 2 examples.
A gamete is a sex cell. Eggs and Sperm = gametes.
Gametes only have 1 copy of each _________.
Chromosome.
Meiosis, in humans, occurs in which 2 organs?
The testes (sperm production) The ovaries (egg production)
Define Meiosis.
Meiosis produces cells which have only half the normal number of chromosomes.
Before the cell divides, what does it do to its DNA?
Duplicates it.
What happens in the first division of Meiosis?
The chromosome pairs line up in the centre of the cell.
The pairs are then pulled apart, so each of the 2 new cells formed from this division has only one copy of each chromosome.
What happens in the second division of Meiosis?
The chromosomes line up again in the centre of the 2 new cells produced from the first devision.
The arms of the chromosomes are then pulled apart in each of these 2 cells to form 4 new gametes, each with only a single set of chromosomes in it
Why are all the gametes different?
Because, before the cell divides, sections of DNA get swapped in the chromosomes.
