Enzymes and Digestion Flashcards
What’s the main purpose of a digestive enzyme?
To break larger molecules down into smaller ones.
Name the 3 large molecules.
Starch, Protein and Fat.
Name the 4 small molecules.
Glycerol, Amino Acids, Sugars and Fatty Acids
Smaller molecules can pass through ________ more easily than larger ones.
The walls of the digestive system.
What is the function of Amylase?
Amylase converts starch into sugars. It is an enzyme that breaks down starch into Maltose and other sugars.
Where is Amylase produced? 3 places.
Salivary Glands, Small Intestine and Pancreas.
What is the function of Protease?
Protease converts proteins into Amino Acids.
Where is Protease produced? 3 places.
Small Intestine, Pancreas and Stomach.
Protease is known as ______ when in the stomach.
Pepsin.
What is the function of Lipase?
Lipase converts Lipids into Glycerol and Fatty Acids.
Where is Lipase produced? 2 places.
Small Intestine and Pancreas
What does Bile do to stomach acid?
Neutralises it.
Where is Bile stored?
Gall Bladder.
Where is Bile released into?
Small Intestine.
Why does Bile neutralise stomach acid?
Because it is alkaline and stomach acid is hydrochloric acid, meaning it contains hydrogen ions and the hydroxide ions combine with the hydrogen ions to form the neutral solution of water.
