A missing person is someone who is?
R = Reported missing to the police.
U = Unknown whereabouts.
F = Fears held for the safety or concern of the welfare of the person.
Fears for safety
When deciding on the course of action to take about a missing person you must consider the persons?
Z = Zone of safety - The usual environment the person can manage in.
A = Age - young and aged persons are more vulnerable.
C = Circumstances of disappearance - unusual, dangerous, suspicious
When looking into the circumstances of a disappearance, what should you consider?
S = Suspicious
U = Unusual
D = Dangerous
Most people fall into one of four categories of a missing person, what are these?
V = Voluntary - juvenile running away from home.
I = Involuntary - kidnapped persons.
L = Lost due to event - at sea, in bush, earthquake.
M = Missing overseas - reported in NZ as missing overseas.
Initial Action to take with a missing persons report?
T = Take the report, obtain full details.
A = Advise Supervisor.
Z = Zone of safety
When dealing with concern for welfare we are looking at?
A = Age
Elderly people living at home
Teenage runaways
C = Circumstances
Recently suffered a traumatic life event
Relationship problems
Employment issues
I = Influences
Drugs / Gangs / Alcohol
Missing person case management follows this process.
File Reviews
Complete Part B of the POL62
Enter file
File is created within NIA – Creating a missing persons alert.
After 3 Days
Contact the informant to see if the subject has returned or made contact.
Inform CIB about the investigation.
After 14 days
Contact the informant to see if the subject has returned or made contact.
Send notification to Missing Persons Unit.
After 30 days
Contact the informant to see if the subject has returned or made contact.
O/C CIB reviews the file.
What to do when a missing person is located?
Update File
Enter the details of the place and circumstances in which they were found.
Interview
About the circumstances.
Could be domestic related / child abuse, all things to be considered.
Update NIA and remove the alert.
Advise the informant that the person has been found.
