ID Suspects Flashcards
What are four methods of ID that police use?
Four methods of identification are:
Formal Visual Identification (ID Parade or Photo Montage)
Voice Identification (must be able to prove that the circumstances relating to the voice ID are reliable)
Finger, palm and foot prints
Forensic Examination (DNA, Blood, Saliva etc).
What are the seven requirements for conducting a formal visual ID: MORPAIN
Seven requirements for conducting a formal visual ID: MORPAIN
M = Montage (pictorial record of what was shown)
O = Others (min of 7 to compare with suspect plus the offender – Total of 8)
R = Record (written record of procedure)
P = Procedure (complies with relevant regulations)
A = ASAP (As soon as practicable after the offence is reported)
I = Inclusion (victim/witness told the suspect may/may not be included in montage)
N = No indication (to the victim as to the identity of the suspect)
What are six reasons for not following the formal ID procedure? RSACSI
Six reasons for not following the formal procedure.
The suspect: RSACSI
R = Refuses to take part in a formal procedure & police do not already hold a photo.
S = Singular appearance (it cannot be disguised to make it singular eg. One eye).
A = Appearance substantially changed after the offence occurred.
C = Chance meeting between the person making ID & the suspect, before the ID was made.
S = Suspect ID was made to an officer soon after the offence reported & in the course of initial
investigation.
I = Investigation. No officer involved in the investigation or prosecution of the offence, could
have reasonably anticipated that ID would be an issue at trial.
Why do we need to ID offenders?
The offenders ID is an ingredient that the Police must prove in every prosecution.
What 4 actions must be carried out when using a photo montage?
Photo Montage
No fewer than 7 other photographs of people similar to the suspect.
All photographs must be devoid of names or other indications of identity
No assistance is to be given to witnesses, and witnesses are not permitted to confer
Once a witness had made an identification using photographs you need to decide if you want other witnesses to make a formal identification
When using Identification Parade for identifying offenders we need to remember?
Identification Parade
Photo montages and ID parades are equally valid formal procedures.
If the suspect refuses, document the refusal and make a note on the file of the reason no formal identification procedure was followed
Police do not need permission to do a photo montage if there is already a usable photo
What must you do if conducting an ID outside of the formal procedure?
If conducting an ID outside of the formal procedure:
Be sure of fairness

Complete a report covering the time, date and place of ID
The name and address of the witness
Approx number of people present.
Lighting.
Number of people with similar appearances.
And attach it to the prosecution file.
When should you conduct formal ID procedures?

What are some examples of the different ways that offenders can be identified by forensic examination?
Blood, hair, skin, body tissue and fluids.
Saliva and semen
Nail scrapings

Voice ID is inadmissible unless the prosecution can prove what?
