what are 4 surgical complications of GI surgery?
ileus- paralysis of intestinal mobility
anastomotic dehiscence- breakdown of anastomoses
adhesions: fibrous tissue caused by inflammatory response
wound- infection or hernia
why do surgical complications occur?
bad practice, handling of bowel, Rx, peritonitis, poor blood supply etc
how can an ileus present?
vomiting, abdominal distension, dehydration, silent abdomen
how may adhesions present?
sometimes with an intestinal obstruction
how do you minimise complications of surgery?
pt selection, careful surgery, constant vigilance
what are 5 GI psychiatric disorders?
globus, functional dysphagia, IBS may be caused by psychological factors, anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa
what are 2 signs of bulimia nervosa?
Russel’s sign, decayed teeth
what can anorexia nervosa cause?
dec Na, K etc and amenorrhoea
