what is IBS?
chronic impairment of bowel function
are females or males more likely to have IBS?
30-40yo females
what other disease may cause IBS?
recent gastroenteritis
what is the scoring system for IBS?
rome 3 criteria pain 3 months + - improves w defaecation - change in stool freq - change in stool appearance
what are ix for IBS?
FBC and Hx
symptoms of IBS?
diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, bloating
signs of IBS?
mucus in PR area, exaggerated gastro-colic reflex, anaemia
what are the 2 types of IBS?
IBS-C and IBS-D
tx for IBS-C?
adjusted diet, anti-spasmodics, laxatives (bulk and anti-inflammatory), aminosalicyclates, 5-HT4 antagonists
tx for IBS-D?
adjusted diet, anti-spasmodics, antidiarrhoeal, 5-HT3 antagonists
what is GORD?
inflammation of oesophagus due to acid reflux from stomach
aetiology of GORD?
incompetent LOSphincter, poor oesophageal clearance, pregnancy, large meals
what medication may cause GORD?
Ca2+ blocker
presenting symptoms of GORD?
heartburn, acid reflux, water brash (excessive salivation), dysphagia, coughing, hoarseness
what are red flag s/s associated to GORD?
dysphagia, wt loss, anaemia, vomiting, UGI ulcer, surgery (peptic ulcer)
