Hypoxia vs. Hypoxemia
Hypoxia: Low oxygen delivery to tissues
Hypoxemia: Low partial pressure of oxygen in the blood
Path of oxygen from atmosphere to hemoglobin
FiO2 –> PAO2 –> PaO2 –> SaO2
- FiO2: Fraction of Inspired Oxygen
- PAO2: Partial pressure of Alveolar oxygen
- PaO2: Partial pressure of arterial oxygen
- SaO2: Arterial oxygen saturation
Example of diffusion defect
Interstitial Pulmonary Fibrosis
SaO2 level and PaO2 level in anemia
Both are NORMAL
*SaO2 and PaO2 are unaffected by the content of hemoglobin
SaO2 level and PaO2 level in CO poisoning
PaO2 = Normal SaO2 = decreased
Treatment for CO poisoning
100% O2
First sign of CO poisoning + other symptoms
- Headache
2. Cherry Red Appearance of Skin
Fe2+ oxidized to Fe3+, which leads to iron in heme that cannot bind to O2; can be caused by drugs or seen in newborns
Methemoglobinemia
SaO2 level and PaO2 level in Methemoglobinemia
PaO2 = Normal SaO2 = decreased
Signs of Methemoglobinemia
Cyanosis
Chocolate-colored blood
Drugs that cause Methemoglobinemia
Sulfa and nitrate drugs
Treatment for methemoglobinemia
IV Methylene blue (reduce Fe+3 to Fe+2)
