The safe Drinking Water Act sdwa
What is referred to as the Superfund law?
The comprehensive environmental response, compensation and liability Act
CERCLA
What is the act that involves National ambient air quality standards?
Clean Air Act CAA
What is the community right to know?
SARA superfund amendments and reauthorization act
What do the colors mean on the Fire diamond?
Blue is Health hazards, yellow is instability and reactivity, red is flammability and white is special information including any unusual reactivity with water
Who enforces the(HMTA) Hazmat materials transportation act?
Department of Transportation
How often is the North American Emergency Response Guidebook revised?
Every four years
What is the white section in North American emergency resource guide book?
This section shares general information on placards, rail cars, pipelines, and trailer identification. It also breaks down the classification of all hazardous materials
What is the yellow section in the North American emergency resource guidebook?
The yellow section helps you identify the specific chemicals that are part of the incident. Each hazardous material has a 4-digit United Nations (UN) number
What is the blue section in the North American emergency resource guide book?
The blue section identifies chemicals in alphabetical order
, what is the orange section of the North American emergency resource guide book?
Once you gather information from the previous sections, you’ll refer to this orange section to understand how to deal with the particular chemical. This section includes information about personal protective equipment (PPE), evacuation procedures, first aid, and spill and fire control measures
What is the green section in the North American emergency resource guide book?
: This section contains information regarding inhalation hazards and water reactivity for small and large spills.
What are engineering controls?
Ways to change work policies and processes to make them safer
What are administrative controls?
They are used when engineering controls can’t eliminate hazards
What is the highest level of protection for hazmat suit?
Level A is a highest level of protection with SCBA or positive pressure respirator
What is the lowest level of protection for HazMat suit?
Level D has the lowest level of protection which is for post decon
How much protection does a level B hazmat suit provide?
It has the highest level of respiratory protection but less skin protection
How much protection does a level C hazmat suit provide?
Lower respiratory and skin protection then level be it’s a good for radiation but not chemicals
What does the number tell you on a respirator filter?
The number is the ability to remove the most penetrating particle size and worst-case testing. 95 means filters out 95% of the contaminant
What are the respirator filter classifications?
N- not resistant to oil
R- somewhat resistant to oil
P- strongly resistant to oil or oil proof
Air bags in cars inflate at a collision force equal to?
Running into a brick wall at 10 to 14 miles per hour
Car fires above what temperature will cause undeployed airbags to inflate?
300°
Airbag inflation system contains sodium azide(Nan3) it is designed to react with the potassium nitrate to produce what?
Nitrogen gas KNo3
How many levels of Hazmat incidents are there?
Three.
Level 1 incidents are small-scale incidents with minimal environmental impact.
Level 2 are larger and scaled than level 1 and since it may pose a threat to life, the environment or property. These incidents will most likely require additional resources and formal response Personnel such as a Hazmat team.
And level 3 are large scale instance supposed to severe threat to human life, the environment and property. These types of incidents require substantial resources and an additional aide on the federal, state or local level.
What is a roentgen?
Standard units to measure radiological exposure
What is the ignition point of natural gas?
1100°-1200°
At what reading on an inside gas leak will cause for the billion to be evacuated and for SCBA to be placed in service?
Anything above 10% of the lower explosive limit(LEL)
At what concentration is propane highly flammable and explosive in?
Concentrations between 2.1%(LEL) and 9.6% (UEL) total volume
At what concentration of CO2 shall scba be placed in service?
If an atmosphere has been evaluated with a carbon monoxide meter, and the meter indicates
carbon monoxide is present at less than 35 parts per million, S.C.B.A. shall be worn, but its use is not required unless the meter indicates a concentration over 35 parts per million. S.C.B.A. shall be placed in service in any atmosphere containing CO2
What is considered an IDLH condition with co2?
Oxygen levels below 19.5% and / or CO2 levels above 40,000 ppm (4%) in a given area
What are 5 broad interacting elements that are key to effectively responding to a hazardous materials incident?
Recognition, evaluation, control, information, and safety,
What is the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Laws and Regulations
is the public law that creates the framework for the proper management of hazardous and non-hazardous solid waste
Where would you find a complete listing of transformers in Washington DC?
On the hazmat unit
Hazmat bulletin 10
If a transformer has less than 50 ppm of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) what color would the label on the transformer be?
The background would be the light blue
What kind of jet fuel is pumped in the underground pipe line at Andrews underground fuel transmission?
Jet A which contains benzene which is a known carcinogen
Hazmat bulletin 11
While fuel is being pumped, pressures within the pipeline will reach what psi?
300 psi
During periods of non-use the pipeline, Andrews, underground fuel transmission pipeline pipeline remains fallen under pressure with approximately how much psi at the river end?
Approximately 85 psi
How many shut off for the underground fuel transmission pipeline Andrews Air Force Base and who can operate them?
Three shut offs, and they are to be operated by NuStar energy pipeline personnel
What are the nine hazard classes?
Explosive
Gases
Flammable and combustible liquids
Flammable solids
Oxidizing substances an oxidizing peroxide
Toxic Substances and Infectious Substances
Radioactive substances
Corrosives
Miscellaneous hazardous material
What is title I of Sara ?
Requires osha to develop health and safety standards covering numerous worker groups who handle or respond to chemical emergencies which led to the development of 29 CFR OSHA 1910.120
HAZWOPER is enforced by osha in 23 states & 2 territories. What is used in the remaining 27 non-osha states ?
Public sector personnel will be covered by a similar regulation enacted by the EPA (40 CFR part 311)
