Hazmat Book Ch 11 Flashcards
What is gross decontamination?
The initial phase of decontamination process, during which the amount of surface contaminant is significantly reduced
Secondary decontamination
The second phase of the decontamination process design to physically or chemically remove surface, containments to a safe and acceptable level. Depending on the scope of nature of the incident, multiple secondary Decon steps may be implemented.
Emergency decontamination
Physical process of immediately reducing decontamination of individuals in a potentially life-threatening situation with or without the formal establishment of a decontamination corridor
Technical decontamination
The plan and systematic process of reducing contamination to a level as low as reasonably achievable. Normally conducted in support of emergency responder recon and entry operations at a hazmat incident as well as for contaminated victims, requiring medical treatment
Mass decontamination
The process Decontaminating large numbers of people in the fast as possible time to reduce surface contamination to a safe level. It is typically a gross decon process, utilizing simply water or soap and water solutions to reduce the level of contamination
Chemical degradation
Is the process of altering the chemical structure of the contaminant through the use of a second chemical material. Should not be used to Decon, chemical, protective clothing, people are animals and never should be applied to the skin.
Neutralization
Is the process used on corrosives to bring the pH of the final solution to somewhere between the range of ph 5 to ph 9. Primarily used to Decon equipment, vehicles, and structures contaminated with a corrosive material
Solidification
Process by which contaminant physically or chemically bond to another object or is encapsulated by it it’s primarily used to Decon equipment in Vehicles.
