What are the Functions of Calcium?
Strong bones and teeth, blood clotting, maintains rhythmic heartbeat, functioning of muscles and nervous system.
What are the deficiency of Calcium?
Osteoporosis in adults and rickets in children
What happens when there is too much Calcium consumed?
Kidney stones
What does calcium work with?
Phosphorus and Vitamin D
What are the functions of Phosphorus?
Helps release energy, healthy bones and teeth and control the metabolic process.
What are the deficiency of Phosphorus?
Osteoporosis in adults and rickets in children.
What happens when to much phosphorus is consumed?
Phossy jaw (erosion in jaw)
What does Phosphorus work with?
Calcium and vitamin D
What is the function of Sodium?
Prevents cramps, maintains permeability of cell membranes, activates some enzymes, transports carbon dioxide in blood and conductions nerve impulses, controls acid base balance on body fluids
What is the deficiency of Sodium?
Muscle cramps, mental apathy,, reduced appetite
What happens when there is to much sodium consumed?
Hypertension
What are the functions of Iron?
Forms red blood cells (Haemoglobin) transporting oxygen to body
What are the deficiency of iron?
Anemia, tiredness
What happens when to much Iron is consumed?
Cirrhosis of liver
What helps with the absorption of Iron?
Vitamin C
What are the functions of Iodine?
Thyroid gland uses iodine to make hormone thyroxine to regulate body’s metabolic rate
What are the deficiency of Iodine?
Goitre= swelling of thyroid gland
What happens when too much Iodine is consumed?
Depress of thyroid gland.
What is the function of Zinc?
Blood clotting, Growth, Reproduction (Sexual Maturation)
